Forzani's Walk/Run
by Ian Harding
Running. What a great form of exercise. Not everyone likes it, but in my case, I've been involved in some sort of sport that has kept me on my feet for almost my entire life (minus the years previous to age 6). I have been running with a couple of friends a couple of times a week for the past month, so when the Forzani Mother's Day Walk/Run came, I figured I'd give it a shot. I ran cross-country when I was younger, but I have never taken part in an event as large as this. More than 11,000 people walk and run every year to raise money. There was a 5km and a 10km course set up. I ran the 10km.
ANYWAY, getting to the reason for my post... Every runner gets a "race chip". Now, I guess it makes sense that out of 11,000+ people, SOME of those chips may not register when crossing the start line with 100 other people at one time. But I mean come on... I ran the 10km, was totally pumped that I had done well, and yet in all of the final time listings (both on the website and in the newspaper), I am not there.
WTF !!
How am I supposed to know how I did? It was my first race and it would have been nice to have an idea of where I placed based on my performance. Luckily, I had a couple of friends who ran the race as well, so when they checked their times, I at least had an idea of what my time was based on how long after me they crossed line.
I know what your saying... YES there was a big clock at the finish line, but again it was my first race... I sprinted at the end giving everything I had, not even realizing there was such a thing.
So ya, to me it was like I wasn't even there. At least I got two free tubes of yogurt at the end... DUMB!!
