A reading

Inventory

~85 magazine articles + ~192 blog posts spanning 2001–2011 — about a quarter of the entire archive's editorial bandwidth. Magazine activity peaked 2004–2008; blog peaked 2006–2009. Magazine = curated long-form (interviews, travel, opinion). Blog = rapid reaction, links, gear takes, civic complaints. Also published as D4V in joint bylines with Crom (gaming reviews, 2001–2003) and MaxPower (the annual Predictions series, 2003–2010).

Voice

Conversational, opinionated, hands-on. Direct address ("I've known people like this"); escalating capitalization for emphasis ("Wow. Wow. Wow."); a qualified enthusiast — quick to praise quality, quicker to call out lazy service or thinking. Reports from inside the experience: pushes the actual bobsled, hikes the trail, asks the artist about their first vinyl.

Topic mix

Music + interviews ~30% · technology / code / design ~20% · travel + outdoor ~15% · culture + local commentary ~15% · photography + visual ~10% · food + social ~5% · other ~5%. The "music" share understates the interview output — a lot of those land under article or review.

The balancing act

R4NT was effectively a one-person operation across five departments, and David ran most of them. He wrote the interviews and the travel essays, but he also shot the photography (party shoots, the underwater "For the Girls" cover, the wallpaper sets, issue covers), designed the magazine and the blog (the V5/V6/V7/V8 redesigns, Slight Design Re-align, UI Tweaks March 2009), coded the CMS (Rails first, then a custom PHP system shipped as R4NT V8 after months of "design, code, and brute force data entry"), and marketed it — issue intros, wallpapers as merch, top-articles round-ups, episode promotion, cross-blog linking. The voice that lands a 3,000-word Costa Rica narrative is the same voice that just wrote the import script for a hundred hours of legacy content. Reading the corpus end-to-end, you can feel the operator and the writer trading bandwidth: the trailing-off late blog isn't disinterest, it's that the platform he built had finally outgrown one person.

Collaborations

  • Crom & D4V — alternating-paragraph gaming and culture reviews, 2001–2003 (Halo, SSX Tricky, Jedi Knight II, Owen Wilson tag-team, plus a Rogers/Shaw rant). Tight back-and-forth banter; the format flatters both writers.
  • Maxpower & D4V — the annual Predictions tradition (2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010+). Year-end editor's notebook — half forecast, half scoring last year's wrong calls. The longest-running format in the magazine.

Evolution

Standout pieces

  1. 10 Days in La Pura Vida — Definitive 3,000+ word Costa Rica narrative: self-aware, practical, awed.
  2. Interview with Daedelus — Signature interview style: smart questions, lets the artist talk, informed follow-ups.
  3. Interview with Fink — R4NT Radio at full strength; transcript now sits alongside the audio.
  4. Interview with Coldcut — R4NT Radio format crystallized: long-form audio + written framing, transcript hand-cleaned.
  5. Springsix Day 1 — Festival liveblog from Graz; pre-social-media dispatch energy.
  6. Screw Thy Customer — Angry manifesto on service-industry age discrimination; his most political magazine piece.
  7. R4NT V8 — Phew! — Launch-night developer post: months of code + 100 hours of content import, written with the same voice he uses for steak marinades.
  8. Calgary Has a Problem: Parking — Civic frustration done well; the blog as unfiltered opinion space.
  9. Yes Man — Movie review that pivots from plot to philosophy; mature late voice.
  10. Predictions 2010… and beyond! — Long-running Maxpower & D4V tradition, six editions deep by this point.
  11. Bobsleigh — Self-deprecating event report; quintessential mid-period blog energy.
  12. Top Articles of 2008 — Meta-editorial: stepping back to curate the year; editor role made explicit.

Throughlines

Curation as authorship — his platform-keeping is as much "his work" as his interviews are. Lived experience > abstraction. A persistent local/global tension: complaining about Calgary parking while filing dispatches from Vienna. A class-conscious fairness instinct (parking, retail, restaurant seating) running through both corpora. And underneath all of it, the operator: every essay he writes is also a thing he had to design, code, photograph, and ship.

Fun details

  • The audio years. Late-era magazine content goes almost entirely audiocast — R4NT Radio episodes with full-length DJ sets and producer interviews. The Fink and Coldcut transcripts added to this archive finally make those sets searchable text.
  • D4V. The byline he reaches for when he isn't running solo. Almost every joint piece in the archive that involves him goes out under it.
  • The wine sidestep. The wine vertical is right there, but he leaves it almost entirely to Adrian — happy to be a guest at someone else's dinner.
  • 2008 turn. The reading list shifts: more TED talks, more philosophy of work, more curating other people's good ideas. The blog becomes an editor's commonplace book.
  • Two voices, one mind. The same writer who lands a 3,000-word Costa Rica narrative will turn around and post a steak marinade. Both feel like him.

The arc

Built R4NT's credibility through interview-based music journalism and first-person travel writing during the magazine's most ambitious years (2004–2007), then grew into a curator, designer, and platform host as digital media reshaped what a regional publication could be — while also being the photographer, the developer, and the marketer behind it. Lasting contribution: a Calgary indie magazine that landed real conversations with internationally working underground artists, and kept at it for a decade, mostly on one person's bandwidth.
