Sony Protection upgraded to "Thugsta"

by Crom

So if you've had your head jammed as far up your ass as mine has been in the last 3 weeks, then you probably haven't heard about the mess that became the Sony BMG Copy protection fiasco. I only know of it because of my stalwart position as an internet potentate, and the fact that my "peoples" rely on my keen wit and savage wordplay. Truly the power to strive and slay was breathed into my soul at birth.

Onwards.

A number of game exploits came about as a result of the software that exists on Sony discs to hide their copy protection software. The first stirrings of which showed up on The Register last week, and expanded with mega power after a well known security blog waxed professional with regards to the other problems that could arise from the softwares ability to hide code from a users machine. Originally it was used to mess with Blizzard's World of Warcraft, so that "hackers" (see: knobs) could run exploits without Blizzards watchdog process noticing. It was later discovered that Sony's player also had functionalities that could be exploited, and hilariously, it turned out to be impossible to remove it. The security blog is Here. It's a pretty messed up story, and if you have any of the Sony software I suggest giving it a look and making sure you don't have the rootkit-maker running on your computer.

In other news, I rule.
