Stop Being an Ass Jack.

by Crom

So if you remember a little while ago I had some comments about Jack Thompson, the reactionary media-whore who was bashing the gaming industry for violence and sex in games. (He was mentioned in the Hot Coffee incident, he used it for leverage against the ESRB whom he blamed for failing to properly rate the game) You should probably check out this Link while it still works. Hopefully they won't pull it, if so i've copied the whole thing and can post it in the forum. Basically the National Institute on Media and the Family sent a letter to ol' Jacky boy and told him to cease and desist using their name, and to remove any and all references to their organization that may give people the impression that they have an affiliation with him.

I can't actually express how much joy I felt when I read this. It was a long time coming, and it's nice to know that even people who don't agree with most of us about gaming, who in fact think that games can hurt their child, are at least prepared to approach the industry in a civil fashion. Frankly Jack's been acting like a fucking child through all of this. Anytime someone calls him on ANYTHING, his only response is to threaten them with legal action.

IF you follow Penny Arcade avidly (which I do) then you've seen some of their interaction with him. In fact if you're into the webcomic scene, you'll see a number of great artists who have had run in's with him. And, in each case, have basically been shit on and told they would be sued, for no apparent reason.

Last week (and I didn't want to bring it up then, because he's an attention whore, and I don't want to feed his dark powers) Thompson made a proposal that if someone made his Game, that he'd proposed, then he'd donate 10k to a charity. The idea is stupid, and basically just a way to bait the industry into either fulfilling his expectations (which no one wants to do) or to not respond, which he'd like just as much, because he can then claim he's correct, since no one had the balls to follow through.

Ok, now you have some of the back story, Gabe, from Penny Arcade, emailed Thompson, commenting that 10k was pretty soft, and that they're own charity offering each year Child's Play came up with 250k last year alone in donations to Children's hospitals. The response was along the lines of "Fuck you, don't email me again or you'll regret it".

Yeah...real pro.
