Calgary, World’s Cleanest?
by grfxguy
According to Forbes.com, Calgary has snapped the enviable place of World's Cleanest City from the squeaky-clean world competitors.
Wait...what?
That's right folks: our oilsands gobbling, F-350 driving urban western province has something to show. Surprising to say the least. According to the website:
"Population: 988,193
Metro area: 5,107 square km
Calgary is the fastest growing city in Canada and has been known in the past as a center for oil and gas. Today it has taken on an added attraction in sports and is becoming more sought by tourists. It has light manufacturing. It was chosen by the Economic Intelligence Unit as a leading city to live in. "
Canada had a pretty decent showing with Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and Ottawa also making notable appearances.
Actual world-rankings:
1. Calgary, Canada
2. Honolulu, USA
3. Helsinki, Finland
4. Ottawa, Canada
5. Minneapolis, USA
T6. Oslo, Norway; Stockholm, Sweden; Zurich, Switzerland
9. Katsuyama, Japan
T10. Bern, Switzerland; Montreal, Canada; Vancouver, Canada; Boston, USA; Lexington, USA; Pittsburgh, USA; Nurnberg, Germany; Geneva, Switzerland
T18. Auckland, New Zealand; Wellington, New Zealand
20. Dublin, Ireland
T21. Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Toronto, Canada
23. Lyon, France
24. Copenhagen, Denmark
25. Kobe, Japan
It's an impressive feat, to be sure (see the link for judging criteria). I encourage everyone, however, to flip through the slide show and note the population density-to-area for the European and Japanese cities. It's amazing that those cities have managed to produce those kind of results with that many people.
