Holiday Microbrew

by MaxPower

With the Christmas season approaching, the frequency of blog postings here has been slowing. However, in the spirit of the season, I present a good microbrew which I had the opportunity to try out recently.

I had not heard of the brewery before - Mt. Begbie Brewing Co. from Revelstoke BC. I had the opportunity to try the "Tall Timber Ale" which is described as "A delicious, dark, full-bodied, English Brown Ale. The use of East-Kent Goldings finishing hops and an authentic top cropping ale yeast stain round out the traditional Brown Ale character. All natural. No preservatives. Perfect with red meat and cheddar cheese."

I can attest to it being good with red meat as I had it accompany an elk sirloin steak straight from the Rocky Mountain Ranch. It was extremely smooth with an almost sweet taste, perhaps a beer for those who do not like the taste of beer. I wouldn't say, however, that the sweetness detracts from the overall tasting quality. I enjoyed it as a change of pace from lighter ales.

I am also interested in trying out some of the beers from Tree Brewing Co out of Kelowna, which I also have had recommended to me.

So props to Mt. Begbie Brewing, and also to the waitress who talked the guy sitting behind me from ordering his elk "well done" by saying "I can't let you get the elk if you get it well done. It will taste like leather. Do you like the taste of leather?" Damn straight, it's medium rare or nothing when it comes to game. He got the salmon.
