Ten Digit Dialing in Alberta - Today!

by MaxPower

When giving an Alberta number I have been conditioned by living in Ontario to give the area code first "403 xxx xxxx" because there is two Toronto area codes 647 and 416 and that is how I always gave the number. You need to dial all 10 digits of the number to get anyone, but obviously don't have to dial 1 first. There is also the 905 area code which is the suburbs of the GTA.

Now 10 digit dialing has come to Alberta. Starting in September 2008 you'll be forced to 10 digit dial if you live in Alberta.

Federal regulators have approved the 587 area code for Alberta, meaning you'll need to dial the area code that you are in before the 7 digit phone number.

The Telus network is accepting 10-digit local calls as early as June 15, 2007, but residents and business customers have more than a year to alter their dialing habits.
